Warli painting is an ancient tribal art form created by the women of the Warli tribe of Maharashtra in India, anecdotally originating in the 10th century CE, although some of the earliest Warli paintings found in the Sahyadri caves, have been found to be around 3000 years old.
This art form typically uses basic geometric shapes to express deep spiritual connection between human life, community and nature. This painting form utilizes some core symbolism of shapes. The circle/circular forms represent the life forces of the sun and the moon, symbolizing continuity and eternal cycle of nature. The triangle/triangular forms (e.g., the human or animal figures are made of conjoining triangles) derived from the observed shapes of mountains and trees, represent balance and human aspiration towards nature. The square represents a sacred enclosure, a piece of land, or a field – the core amalgamation of all the elements and communal togetherness towards productivity, industriousness and spiritual communion amongst the peoples.
This is my very novice depiction and interpretation of our community in Finland, made in acrylic on canvas. I found this Warli art form to be particularly inspirational for our Bengali community in Finland, where we all stand united and in perfect harmony with nature and our shared communal heritage. I hope we keep drawing inspirations from nature and our heritage and keep our community united and growing strong as always.
